Disability Services

Disability services built around the person. We support people with disability to live the everyday life they choose: at home, in the community and with the people who matter to them.

How we can help

Acupuncture as complementary support

Some people with disability, and the family members who care for them, ask about acupuncture as part of their wider care. Acupuncture may help some people with ongoing muscle and joint pain, tension, poor sleep and stress, used alongside the care of their GP, specialist and therapy team, never in place of it.

If you would like to include acupuncture in your support, talk to us and to your GP first. Treatment should be given by an AHPRA-registered Chinese medicine practitioner who knows your health history, your medicines and how you communicate best, and who can adapt the session to your needs, for example shorter appointments, a support person in the room or a quieter time of day.

Ask your plan manager or support coordinator whether your plan can cover it. Where it cannot, acupuncture is often paid privately or claimed through the extras cover of private health insurance.

Chinese herbal medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is another part of the same tradition. A registered practitioner may suggest a herbal formula, chosen for the individual, to be used alongside the care of the treating team. Because herbs can interact with prescribed medicines, please tell your GP and pharmacist about any herbs before starting, and take extra care during pregnancy and for children, where the treating doctor should agree first.

This page is general information, not personal medical advice. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are complementary to standard medical care. Please keep your GP and treating team informed before starting any new therapy.
